Browsing Two main browses are possible from the navigation bar, by Country-Subject, and by Journal Title. Such browses present lists sorted by a principle appropriate to that particular browse. They also can give you a feel for what is included in the database. The country-subject browse can also be initiated after you have found your results, simply by clicking the hyperlink in the Subjects line. When you browse by country-subject, in addition to the list of countries represented in the BAS, you will also find some general terms that will enable you to search for several countries simultaneously, such as East Asia, Indian Ocean, South Asia and Southeast Asia. (Please note, however, that searching for Asia will only give you those articles pertaining to the whole of Asia, not all articles of all countries covered by the BAS). By selecting consecutively additional subdivisions to progressively narrower categories, you will arrive at the lowest subject level possible, where the actual records pertaining to that level are displayed. Note that not all (sub)divisions exist for all countries. This is especially the case for subject period subdivisions, as they tend to be specific to each individual country. By using the country-subject browse, you can move down anywhere from one to three subject levels before retrieving all of the publications you are searching for under the lowest subject level. You will not be able, however, to conduct a browse specifying only the four special (or "floating") subject headings--"Bibliography", "Reference", "Sources", and "Study & Teaching"--that can be applied at each and every subject level. Publications classified as such will be interfiled with all other publications on the same subjects without any further special subject designation. If you wish only to retrieve publications using one of these four special subject headings, please use advanced search instead. When you browse by journal title, you will
be presented with an alphabetic navigation bar. Choosing one
particular letter gives you an alphabetical listing of all of the journal
titles beginning with that letter, ignoring initial articles.
From there you can choose a year to see a list of entries from that
journal for that year. Selecting this browse from the navigation bar
is also a good way to see the latest entries added to the BAS
for a particular journal.
